Chelmsford Roofline cover the length and breadth of the beautiful county of Essex fitting new & replacement fascias, soffits, guttering and weatherboard.
We would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the wonderful towns, cities and villages we visit regularly. We shall start with Wickford, Romford and South Woodham Ferrers for no other reason than they have featured on our schedules in the last few days.
Before We Begin – A Homeowner’s Guide to Roofline Products
Chelmsford Roofline are experts at the installation of new & replacement fascias, soffits, boxboards, bargeboards, weatherboard cladding, guttering and downpipes. We provide a fantastic range of roofline products from all the biggest names in the industry including Eurocell and Marley Eternit.
Every once in a while – and we understand why it happens – some of our customers confuse their fascias with their weatherboard, so here is a brief guide to what is what.
- Fascias – The fascia looks like a skirting board that runs around the top of the exterior wall. Fascias protect the roof space from rain, wind, sleet and snow.
- Soffits – Soffits are the downwards facing boards that run under the fascia. They fill the gap between the fascia and the wall. Soffits are usually fitted with air vents to provide ventilation to the roof space and loft.
- Guttering and Downpipes – Guttering and downpipes clear excess water away from the roof and walls. Leaking and damaged guttering and downpipes allow water to seep into brickwork and mortar.
- Bargeboards – Bargeboards are fitted under the eaves and protect the roof rafters at the gable end of a building.
- Boxboards – Boxboards form a weatherproof seal between fascias, soffits and bargeboards.
- Weatherboard – weatherboard cladding is both a practical and a decorative feature that protects exposed brickwork and timber from the elements. Weatherboard has always been popular in coastal or damp regions but modern weatherboard is now often used as an attractive architectural feature.
Soffits, Fascias & Weatherboard in Essex
Traditionally fascias, soffits and weatherboard were made of wood. Timber products work effectively as long as they are well-maintained. Typically, timber fascias and soffits need to be primed, undercoated and painted every five or six years to prevent rot and weather damage. This can be expensive, time consuming and is potentially dangerous, which is one of the reasons it is often deliberately overlooked on home maintenance schedules.
Chelmsford Roofline installs modern PVCu fascias and soffits that are maintenance-free and built to last. Eurocell fascias and soffits installed by Chelmsford Roofline have a 20 year guarantee against damage and discoloration. Eurocell products come in an amazing choice of colours – including wood-effect finishes – and are available in standard or ogee styling.
Chelmsford Roofline recommends Cedral weatherboard from Marley Eternit. Cedral weatherboard is manufactured from fibre cement for its strength and versatility. Modern weatherboard will maintain its charm for decades to come.
Wickford
Wickford is a delightful town just a few miles north east of Basildon. For a relatively small town it has a remarkable number of excellent restaurants – 33 at our last count. From French cuisine to eel & pie shops, Wikford serves up a treat.
Not many people know this but Wickford was the birthplace of British naturism with the founding of the British Gymnosophist society in 1922. If you ever see a naked man up a ladder, fixing a fascia, check out the name on the side of the van. (It won’t be us.)
Romford
The question is, is Romford in Essex? Technically, no. The town of Romford is inside the M25, it is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Havering, and it is recognised in the London Plan as one of the 11 regionally significant metropolitan centres of Greater London. Of course, historically Romford is an Essex town and still has a sense of community that can be found in Essex towns like Basildon, Brentwood or Chelmsford. Romford is also great for a night out at the Greyhound Stadium.
South Woodham Ferrers
The town of South Woodham Ferrers is on the outskirts of the Borough of Chelmsford and is perhaps best known for Bushy Hill – or ‘Radar Hill’ – as it was called after it became the prime radar testing site for first Marconi and later BAE Systems.
South Woodham Ferrers is equally famous amongst Tolkein fans with a number of roads in the town being named after places and characters in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings such as Gandalf’s Ride, Gimli Watch, Rivendell Vale and Hobbiton Hill.
